Kite kit decorating — more fun, more creative, more you!

Decorating kite kit

SPRING IS ALMOST HERE

Spring weather is just around the corner. Time to bring out your kites or materials to make them. If the kite is already made, then check to make sure all the kite spars are there and fit. And the kite sail does not need repair. If you are making your kite kit into a kite, then the fun is just beginning.

KITE KIT DECORATING TIPS

You need to remember some decorating concepts before purchasing different items.  You need to consider the material of the kite kit sail.  If it is paper, you will be able to use any crayon or water soluble marker. A paper sail is not as strong as a plastic one so don’t plan to weigh down the sail with lots of stickers. If the sail is plastic, then you will be able to use only permanent markers as water-soluble markers smear on plastic.

The Kites…on a Roll® kite kits are made of plastic.  Any marker, paint or nail polish has to be permanent.  Any water-soluble product will not stick to plastic; the color will only smear. Sample the marker on the edge of the plastic to see how it looks or sticks. (Make sure you allow enough time for the colors to dry.)  The Fly Me Kite kite kits are made of paper so crayons or water-soluble markers will work. There is a writable coating on our Kites…on a Roll® Sled kits so you could use crayons.  They are not as bright as permanent markers.

Since our plastic is translucent, large pictures or line drawings can be placed under the plastic to trace.  Look for coloring books that offer great pictures for tracing. A book of flags is an ideal place to find drawing ideas.

If working with permanent markers, purchase the thin, vinyl (without latex) gloves at a food, hardware or medical supply store. These gloves keep little hands clean. Office supply stores have large Avery Dennison labels in many great colors, and shapes. While there, look for permanent markers and multi-colored tape and patterned duck tape in the aisles.

TYPES OF SUPPLIES

The craft stores carry many scrapbooking items that can decorate your kite kit. Just remember that the kite goes up in the air so the designs need to be large. And since the kite goes up in the air be aware of added weight to your kite.

When purchasing supplies for completing your kite kit, do consider the age and abilities of your kite makers and the amount of time you have for the kite making. We estimate the kite building time with each kit, but decorating is subjective and does take extra time.  Please allow for that time in your lesson. Make the sample we send you so the kite makers can see what the finished product will be like. That sample allows you to try different bits and pieces that you purchased at all the wonderful stores beckoning your creative ideas.

We have lots of newspaper bags for your kite makers to take home their rolled-up finished kites.  Let us know how many you need – free of charge!

Kites promote health and joy, a sense that all is right with the world. This is why we are so positive about kite making and kite flying in the coming year!

Winter Kite Making Becomes Spring Kite Flying

Young Girl in Winter Kite Making Class

Winter Kite Making Now Brings us Closer to Spring

It’s hard to think of kites when we endured some extremely cold weather and blizzardly conditions. But every day brings us closer to Spring! A sure sign of the coming season is the appearance of gardening catalogs in mailboxes. That’s our cue to think of kites.  And you never know, there might be a glorious spring day in February (February 8 is National Kite Flying Day ) when we wished we could go kite flying.

So let’s get prepared!  Set aside a day for winter kite making. Bring out the folded-up kites from last fall, air them out, and examine them to see if they need any repairs. Or, look for that kite pattern you want to make and create it now! Invite a fellow kite maker over and have a group session. The beauty of making kites with family and friends teaches people that they can make things and learn to use them, that real life is to be experienced.

There are many winter kite making workshops in early spring.  Check out American Kitefliers Association and see what events the AKA calendar lists for early spring. There might even be winter flying dates listed in an area near you. The recent weather has left most of us with cabin fever. We need to get outside. If we plan to repair or make our kites while the weather is keeping us in, we will be ready for that first sunny, comfortable day to go out.

Benefits of Winter Kite Making Now

Winter Kite Making Sky

Regardless of the weather, kite making and kite flying become an important part of your state of mind. Bogged down by the stresses and strains of today’s world, people often wish for the simpler days. There was time to spend outdoors with family and friends, enjoying the fresh air together, making the time to go outside and play. Most of us go outdoors just to do errands or to rush to that next appointment. We don’t get to explore nature and make discoveries, to enjoy life with people of different generations.

Families and friends need an activity to gather around outdoors and an activity in which everyone can participate. Kites bring to mind the brilliant sun, dazzling colors, the majesty of flight and the power of the wind. We need those sensations back in our lives again. We need to be reminded that the world around us, the natural world, is wondrous and healing, regardless of the weather.

Kites promote health and joy, a sense that all is right with the world. This is why we are so positive about kite making and kite flying in the coming year!

Family Kite Making…a great ingredient for your holiday recipes

kite making for the holidays

The holidays are coming and you are probably scurrying around finding ingredients, supplies, gifts, making lists and checking them twice. After you plan your menu, you might want to consider what to do to keep people happy while you’re assembling or preparing. It’s also good to plan what to do after the meal is consumed and food put away. Some, not all, like football games; some, not all, want to take a walk; some, not all, want to rest. For those not in those categories, you might want to consider having a friend and family kite making and kite flying activity. This covers all generations, whether they be family and/or friends. It’s a terrific inter-generational experience!

Family Kite Making–Part of Your Holiday Trip or Take Our Kite Kit on the Road

If you are going away for the holidays, consider using our kite making kits as a great activity during the vacation. If the weather is not good, the group can assemble and decorate the kite kits. You can hold most beautiful, ugliest, funniest kite contests. Weather improves and you have a beautiful day to take the newly made kites outdoors to fly. The kites make for a wonderful memory of a great family or friend get-together. You will only need to take our kit and provide  tape, scissors and decorating items such as permanent markers. Pre-cut sticks and kite string wrapped around plastic handles come with the kit. I would also recommend your taking (or asking us to include in the order) newspaper bags for bringing the finished kite home. The kites fold up for ease in transport.

No matter how you are celebrating the winter holidays, kite making and kite flying can make the celebrations better.
