Kite Making-the perfect back-to-school activity

Kite making-the perfect back-to-school activityIt’s that time of year again–back-to-school sales, early morning band practices, athletes back on the field, class schedules mailed out, teachers creating exciting classroom walls. Quite a shift from the lazy, hazy days of summer.  Here’s how kite making helps ease students and teachers back into the structure of school and our kite making kits make the activity perfect!

Kite Making in the Curriculum

Reading: Our instructions. To make a kit turn into a successful kite, instructions have to be read and followed correctly or the kites won’t fly. Great feedback! And there are stories, books, poems and songs about kites and kiting. The history of kites, dating back thousands of years, the cultural uses of kites in many countries, the scientific experiments using kites become  great stories.

‘Riting: Kite stories, poems and instructions to make our kits.  I found that instructions are very difficult to write. How to make our kits into kites would be a wonderful writing exercise for students. Creative writing topics: what would I see if I were the kite flying, how would I feel if I were the kite flying, where would I, the kite, travel if my kite string were cut, topics that stretch the imagination as they are described on paper.

‘Rithmetic: Lots of measurements and understanding of geometry. In general, successful kite making requires good math skills. Check out the NASA site on our Links page.

Back-to-school Fun

Back-to-school activities in the classroom needn’t feel like back to school for students or teachers. Kite making and kite flying help turn academic topics and relevant courses into fun  areas of study. If you look at our LINKS page, you will find lots of kite information that will help you as you find ways to bring kites into your back-to-school curriculum.

Kite making is also a great “getting to know you activity”.  Ice breaker activities really help students entering a program or a school for the first time. The “newbies” become more comfortable and at ease in the new surroundings if they have met others while all working together.

Adults Flying Kites –To Be a Kid Again!

Adult flying the delta kite he made at a team building event

Kite flying doesn’t have to be only for kids. There is a kid lingering in each adult and that kid comes out as soon as you hand an adult a kite. Sometimes we use kids as an excuse for us to engage in childlike activities–that works for me.  Sometimes, we participate in adult events using childlike activities to make participants more comfortable. Sometimes we use kite making and kite flying to bring generations together, becoming the perfect intergenerational happening! Sometimes adults flying kites is the perfect way to spend a day!

Adults Flying Kites for Family Reunionsadults flying kites

Family reunions are the perfect venue for kite making and kite flying, encouraging the best multi-generational mingling. Kiting is one of those activities that goes beyond age.  If the reunion is held near a beach, a field, a park, you have the area for the flying. In your planning check to see if  there is a shelter or an indoor space for making the kites near the area where the kite flying will occur.

Corporate Team Building

adults flying kitesClients in the corporate sector who used our kite building kits found them to be a successful tool for helping employees discover one another’s skills.  Whenever any organization needs to build its team culture, adult kite making is one of the best group activities to select. The point of team building activities…to get people to work together. Complete engagement starts with adult kite building and decorating the kites, ending in flying them together as a group. Adult kite making is one activity that is not only fun for everyone, but also brings people together. Adults flying kites get the employees out of the office and into the outdoors. Truly a wonderful pastime.

Bringing together a group of people, many whom do not know one another, can sometimes be an awkward experience. Whether it be part of an orientation program or just a way for strangers to meet, adult kite building is fun for everyone–irrespective of age or physical capacity. The activity requires everyone to do something which encourages people to introduce themselves in order to work together.

Kites promote health and joy, a sense that all is right with the world. Adults flying kites can bring out the kid in you–regardless of your age. This is why we are so positive about kite making and kite flying!
