PLAY–its importance to our frame of mind

I found an interesting article in the May 2019 issue of bottomline HEALTH about the value of PLAY. The author, Dr.Stuart Brown, seems to be giving us, as adults, permission to PLAY. When we were children, we just played.  We turned most of our activities into play, whether games, chores, making messes, singing, almost any action. Play gives us all opportunities to think creatively, solve problems,  strengthen conflict resolution and just imagine.  The illustrations in the article show an adult on a swing and another adult flying a kite. Kite making and kite flying are all about PLAY and its benefits, bringing both inside and outside play into your life.  Just the idea of a kite has to bring a smile to your face and ideas into your head as you think about the fun you’ll have as you create your flying object and then take it outside to fly.

Play indoors–kite making

Whether you make it from scratch or use patterns like our kite kits, your creative juices are flowing:  how decorative do you want it to be, how high do you want to fly, where are you going to fly it, and will it FLY. That’s one of the best skills kite making can teach–how to follow instructions. Kite making correctly leads to successful kite flying. Instant feedback! Once your kite is made, then you need to consider where you will fly it.  Checking different outdoor spaces with room for running, few trees or poles for kite lines to tangle, fun spaces to experiment with your kite, string and wind, that is the challenge.  You may want to invite others to join you in the making and flying of kites. Share the fun!

Play outdoors–kite flyingplay

Once outdoors, a different play mindset occurs. Kite flying lets you explore your environment. The electronics are put away and it’s just you, your kite, the wind, and the sounds and smells surrounding you. You’re interacting with your natural world. Science, ecology, art all come together to make your kite flying a great and memorable experience.

Spring Ushers in the Kite Season!

Regardless of how the weather is behaving outside, Spring is coming to your neighborhood!  There is more daylight; garden and seed catalogs arrive in your mailbox; some trees are budding; maple trees are tapped, spring cleaning chores are planned. And Feb. 8 is National Kite Flying Day! To celebrate (and depending upon the weather), you can either make the kite inside or fly it outside. If you’re not quite ready in February, you have the whole month of April to celebrate kites with National Kite Month.

Regardless of your schedule this Spring, the idea of a kite needs to be an important part of your state of mind.

Bogged down by the stresses and strains of today’s world, people often wish for the simpler days, when we made time to spend outdoors with family and friends, enjoying the fresh air together, making the plans to go outside and play.

Nowadays, most of us go outdoors just to do errands or to rush to that next appointment. We don’t get to hear the giggles of little children, to explore nature and make discoveries, to enjoy life with people of different generations.

Kites and kiting bring us together. They come to us from ancient cultures and lead us back to the mysteries of the skies above and the sweetness of simpler times.

Kites bring to mind the brilliant sun, dazzling colors, the majesty of flight and the power of the wind. We need those back in our lives again. We need to be reminded that the world around us, the natural world, is wondrous and healing.

Children need to be taught that they can make things and learn to use them, that real life is to be experienced. Families and friends need an activity to gather around outdoors and an activity in which everyone can participate.

Kites can be complex designs or simple forms, constructed from sophisticated or basic materials made from scratch. Toys become learning tools, sporting goods or works of art.

Kites promote health and joy, a sense that all is right with the world. This is why we are so positive about kite making and kite flying in the 21st century!
