Family Kite Making…a great ingredient for your holiday recipes

kite making for the holidays

The holidays are coming and you are probably scurrying around finding ingredients, supplies, gifts, making lists and checking them twice. After you plan your menu, you might want to consider what to do to keep people happy while you’re assembling or preparing. It’s also good to plan what to do after the meal is consumed and food put away. Some, not all, like football games; some, not all, want to take a walk; some, not all, want to rest. For those not in those categories, you might want to consider having a friend and family kite making and kite flying activity. This covers all generations, whether they be family and/or friends. It’s a terrific inter-generational experience!

Family Kite Making–Part of Your Holiday Trip or Take Our Kite Kit on the Road

If you are going away for the holidays, consider using our kite making kits as a great activity during the vacation. If the weather is not good, the group can assemble and decorate the kite kits. You can hold most beautiful, ugliest, funniest kite contests. Weather improves and you have a beautiful day to take the newly made kites outdoors to fly. The kites make for a wonderful memory of a great family or friend get-together. You will only need to take our kit and provide  tape, scissors and decorating items such as permanent markers. Pre-cut sticks and kite string wrapped around plastic handles come with the kit. I would also recommend your taking (or asking us to include in the order) newspaper bags for bringing the finished kite home. The kites fold up for ease in transport.

No matter how you are celebrating the winter holidays, kite making and kite flying can make the celebrations better.

Kites…on a Roll® brings together kids of all ages. We offer easy to make and easy to fly kites, the perfect group activity. Kids of all ages love our kites! To purchase any of our products, please check out our store to order your kite kits!

Kite Making+Kite Flying+Autumn Winds=Great Fall Fun

Group flying the 'Fly Me Kite' kits they made in kite making activity

Autumn is the perfect time to fly your kite: a gorgeous backdrop of multicolored trees, crisp smells of Fall, nice, steady winds. All you need to do is make a quick and easy kite so your time is spent flying during this glorious season.   Kite making and kite flying become the activities that encourage you to be outside with friends, family or just yourself.

Autumn Kite Flying Festivals

Others must think this is a wonderful season for kite making.  The internet lists lots of kite festivals and events all over the country, all over the world, depending upon the season. Put in key phrases such as kite festivals near whatever location you want and/or best places to fly kites near whatever location you want.  It’s amazing what will turn up for your keyword search. An example is the Veterans Day Fall Fly on TI which is a veterans’ celebration on Treasure Island FL on Nov.12-13. Many kite clubs have monthly kite flies. Visit the American Kitefliers Association site for a listing of kite flying events.

Kite Making Ahead of Event

It is much easier to make your kites ahead of the event instead of on the field. An easy way to carry your own homemade kite is to slide it, rolled up, into a plastic newspaper bag. To roll it easily, remove the tape that fastens the kite spar (stick) across your kite sail, place the dowel on top of the sail and roll up the kite around the stick. If the kite has a tail, (like our Sled or Malay Bird kits) fold the tail on to the top of the sail and place the kite stick on top of that. Then roll up the kite. Slide the folded kite into a plastic newspaper bag and carry it easily to the flying field. We recommend bringing extra tape to the field in case a dowel pops out or kite string separates from the sail.

S.T.E.M., S.T.E.A.M., KITE MAKING and KITE FLYING

KITING is the perfect STEM/STEAM activity!Kite making and kite flying are the perfect hands-on activities for the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and STEAM ( adding the Arts to STEM) curricula. These major areas of study encourage kids of all ages to understand how the world around us works, foster creative and critical thinking, involve problem-solving skills, and engage the student in active learning experiences.

KITING is the perfect STEM/STEAM activity!

Kite making and kite flying can be as easy or as complicated as you want it to be. Each time you engage in kiting, you are employing at least two of the STEM/STEAM components. That’s why KITING is the perfect STEM/STEAM activity!

Kite making & flying as a STEM activity

S science: weather, physics, wind, aerodynamics, scientific research, Ben Franklin and Alexander Graham Bell

T technology: kite design, scientific research, kite aerial photography

E engineering: kite design, instruments for using kites for scientific research, uses of kites through the ages

M  math: geometry, measurements such as altitude, length of kite line and tails, distance.

Turn STEM into STEAM

Turn STEM into STEAM by adding the (arts)designing the kite, decorating the kite, reading about kites through literature or poetry.

If you are involved in STEM/STEAM programming, consider kite making and kite flying as activities to encourage your students’ hands-on learning and hands-on exploration of the world around them.
