MAKING KITES AS A CREATIVE ACTIVITY

CREATIVITY WITH KITE BUILDING KITS

Since our kite kits are a blank canvas, except for the pattern lines, the kite makers have a freedom of expression.

There are some “rules” to  follow before that freedom of expression comes into play which will make your life easier!

MAKING KITE BUILDING EASIER:

The kite sails are plastic so any marker used must be a permanent marker. If using markers with younger kite makers, you might want to get thin plastic gloves without latex, purchased at grocery stores or pharmacies, to cover their hands. Any decorating tool that is water soluble will not stick to plastic; the marks will smear on the plastic surface and the hands that are decorating.

Tape can be decorative or not. Just remember that the stickier the tape the harder it is to remove if there is a mistake. It is important for the kite maker to press down firmly on the tape over the sticks, the plastic sail or the string. Always take extra tape to the flying field.

Use adult scissors to cut out the plastic pattern pieces. Child scissors won’t work.

If the kite maker uses a lot of markers or paints, plan for time for the colors to dry.

We provide a sample kit to make into a kite. Always make your sample kite ahead of time. Not only do you become familiar with how the kit is assembled into a kite but the kids can see what a finished kite looks like.  They see what their efforts will create.

DECORATING IDEAS

Some kids are very creative, some have difficulty thinking of what to draw. You may want to have some ideas ready for them to get the thinking started: birds, animals, flowers, dinosaurs, themes, sports, flags. It might help to give the kite maker a sheet of paper to practice sketching their ideas.

Clip art is also a very good source for ideas.

Whatever they draw, the kite makers need to know that their drawings need to be large, as the kite, when it flies, will be 100+ feet away.

The plastic kite material is translucent so large designs can be placed under the plastic and traced.

Some craft and office supply stores have great crafty products to use when decorating the kites.
