S.T.E.M., S.T.E.A.M., KITE MAKING and KITE FLYING

KITING is the perfect STEM/STEAM activity!Kite making and kite flying are the perfect hands-on activities for the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and STEAM ( adding the Arts to STEM) curricula. These major areas of study encourage kids of all ages to understand how the world around us works, foster creative and critical thinking, involve problem-solving skills, and engage the student in active learning experiences.

KITING is the perfect STEM/STEAM activity!

Kite making and kite flying can be as easy or as complicated as you want it to be. Each time you engage in kiting, you are employing at least two of the STEM/STEAM components. That’s why KITING is the perfect STEM/STEAM activity!

Kite making & flying as a STEM activity

S science: weather, physics, wind, aerodynamics, scientific research, Ben Franklin and Alexander Graham Bell

T technology: kite design, scientific research, kite aerial photography

E engineering: kite design, instruments for using kites for scientific research, uses of kites through the ages

M  math: geometry, measurements such as altitude, length of kite line and tails, distance.

Turn STEM into STEAM

Turn STEM into STEAM by adding the (arts)designing the kite, decorating the kite, reading about kites through literature or poetry.

If you are involved in STEM/STEAM programming, consider kite making and kite flying as activities to encourage your students’ hands-on learning and hands-on exploration of the world around them.

Spring can start in February! National Kite Flying Day Feb. 8 or National Kite Month in April

7.jpgSpring is coming……! In addition to garden catalogs arriving in your mailbox, Feb. 8 is National Kite Flying Day. Depending on the weather, you can make the kite inside or fly it outside. If you’re not quite ready in February you have the whole month of April to celebrate kites with National Kite Month.

Regardless of your schedule, kiting is an important part of your state of mind.

Bogged down by the stresses and strains of today’s world, people often wish for the simpler days, when there was time to spend outdoors with family and friends, enjoying the fresh air together, making the time to go outside and play.

Nowadays, most of us go outdoors just to do errands or to rush to that next appointment. We don’t get to hear the giggles of little children, to explore nature and make discoveries, to enjoy life with people of different generations.

Kites and kiting bring us together. They come to us from ancient cultures and lead us back to the mysteries of the skies above and the sweetness of simpler times.

Kites bring to mind the brilliant sun, dazzling colors, the majesty of flight and the power of the wind. We need those back in our lives again. We need to be reminded that the world around us, the natural world, is wondrous and healing.

Children need to be taught that they can make things and learn to use them, that real life is to be experienced. Families and friends need an activity to gather around outdoors and an activity in which everyone can participate.

Kites can be complex designs or simple forms. Constructed from sophisticated or basic materials made from scratch. Toys become learning tools, sporting goods or works of art.

Kites promote health and joy, a sense that all is right with the world. This is why we are so positive about kite making and kite flying in the 21st century!
