Our Kite Making Kits-more than the sum of its parts

When you receive our Kites…on a Roll® kite kits, you are seeing a plastic sheet of 20 patterns rolled up around a cardboard tube with the center filled with pre-cut dowels and string wrapped around plastic handles. Educational material is wrapped around the plastic sheet and the whole kit is slipped into a clear plastic tube.  Each of the component parts: the plastic imprinted with patterns (3 different ones), pre-cut sticks, cardboard tubes, educational material, kite string wrapped around plastic handles and plastic sleeves are shipped to a sheltered workshop, Murray Ridge Production Center, murrayridgecenter.org.  The center provides lifelong services to challenged residents and their families in Lorain County, Ohio.024

The assembling of our kite kits is a perfect task  for the workshop. This opportunity/vocational center provides jobs for individuals with developmental disabilities: plastic sheet comes on large rolls to be cut into 20 patterns and rolled on cardboard tubes, the bulk ordered sticks are bundled into 20 sets, the string on winders are packaged into 5 groups of 4 sets for each roll. Everything but the string comes from the USA., the string on winders is shipped from Taiwan.  All these bits and pieces are assembled into the kit you purchase.  You are not only providing yourself and your group with lots of fun, creative play and outdoor activity, but you are also providing meaningful employment for others.022

Autumn Winds–some of the best winds for kite flying

kids-of-all-agesMost people associate spring winds with kite flying. But those winds can be gusty, and the days can still have a winter chill.  Autumn winds are more steady; the days can still be warm, with crickets chirping, cicadas buzzing, and leaves turning into beautiful colors. The perfect time to be outside with friends, family or just yourself!

Others must think this is a wonderful time for flying kites too because the internet  lists  many kite festivals and events all over the country. Google is made for this kind of inquiry: kite festivals near ____ (fill in the blank), best places to fly a kite near_______ (fill in the blank), the nearest location to fly kites near________(fill in the blank).

Two festivals worthy of note are: One Sky One World which promotes peace throughout the world with kite flying. This event is held the second Sunday in October, this year being October 9, 2016 in locations around the world. Check oneskyoneworld.org for a location or kite event near you.

The annual American Kitefliers Association convention is Oct. 3-8, 2016 in Seaside OR. Lots of kite flying, kite workshops, kite people.  Check www.kite.org for more information.

Kite Making and the 3 R’s (reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic)

Depending upon where you live in the country, school will be starting in several weeks. This is hard to believe as a huge heat wave is spreading across the US, tomatoes are just turning, cicadas are “singing”. It seems as if the Summer Solstice was just the other day. But the calendar doesn’t stop moving forward!  Stores are running “Back to School” ads, sport teams are practicing, school personnel are gearing up for another great school year.

Kite making and kite flying help ease students and teachers into another academic year. Kiting makes the perfect activity for much of the school curriculum and our kite kits make the activity perfect!

Reading: Our instructions. To make a kit turn into a successful kite, instructions have to be read and followed correctly or the kites won’t fly. Great feed-back! There are stories, books, poems and songs about kites and kiting. The history of kites, dating back thousands of years, makes a great story.

‘Riting: Kite stories, poems and instructions to make our kits.  I have found that instructions are very difficult to write; this would be a wonderful writing exercise for students. Creative writing topics: what would I see if I were the kite flying, how would I feel if I were the kite flying, where would I, the kite, travel if my kite string were cut.

‘Rithmetic: Lots of measurements,  geometry, in general good math skills are required for successful kite making. Check out the NASA site on our Links page.

Back-to-school activities in the classroom needn’t feel like back to school for students or teachers. Kite making and kite flying turn academic topics into fun and relevant courses of study. If you look at our LINKS page, you will find lots of kite information that will help you as you find ways to bring kites into your back-to-school curriculum.
